Chapter 10

Julia and Sam went back to Sam’s accommodation. As they approached the building, they saw a group of people waiting outside the main door, including Melissa and her mum.

Sam called over to a young man, “Gavin, what’s going on? Why are you all outside?”

Gavin replied, “The cops told us to get out. They’re searching everywhere. I don’t know how long they’re going to be.”

As if on cue, the main door opened and DI Thostlewaite came out. He was followed by a couple of uniformed officers. The inspector bellowed, “You can go back in now. Thanks for your patience.” He ambled away from the door.

There was a bit of mumbling and moaning from the people who’d been waiting outside. They began to make their way towards the main door. Sam and Julia followed behind.

Something caught Julia’s attention. She frowned. There was something wrong here. Hadn’t she been …? Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone. She answered it. It was her dad.

“Hello there, love,” Dad said in a cheery manner. “We can’t let you loose anywhere, can we? What have you got yourself involved in now? Did you get those links I sent you?”

“The ones about removing hexes and curses? Yes, I got them. Dad, I’m not cursed. I just seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Dad chuckled. “I’d say you were in the right place at the right time. I know you’re not cursed, I was only having a laugh with you. I’m glad you’re there with Sam at this terrible time. Having his friend die, especially in suspicious circumstances, would have been hard for him to deal with if you weren’t there. How’s he doing?”

“He’s doing alright. Do you want to talk to him?”

“I’ll text him later. I wanted to make sure you were alright too. Have you made yourself known to the local police yet? Have you been making your own investigations? Have you got a list of suspects? I bet you have.” He chuckled again.

A shadow fell over Julia and she looked up to see DI Thostlewaite inspecting her. His eyes bored right into hers.

Julia turned away slightly and said, “Dad, I have to go now. I’ll speak to you later. I’m coming home tomorrow. I’ll tell you everything then.”

“Aye, you do that, love. Take care of Sam, and take care of yourself.”

Julia could still feel the inspector’s eyes on her so she quickly ended the call and put her phone away. She turned back to the inspector and gave him a bright smile.

DI Thostlewaite gave her a solemn nod in return. “Ms Blake, can I have a quiet word with you, please?”

Julia looked over at Sam. He said, “I’ll wait inside for you.” He walked towards the main door and went in.

DI Thostlewaite took Julia to one side and said, “What have you found out about Elliot Scott’s death?”

Julia folded her arms. “Why would I have found anything out? I don’t work for the police.”

DI Thostlewaite stared into her eyes and didn’t say anything.
